Following is a list of Tribal Chiefs of the Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation that evolved under several names through the years.

1947 June to 1981 Cowasuck of the Coos Clan Chief Elwin (Joe) Pero Chief

•             1980 Dec. Associate Chief M. Stone steps down and Howard F. Knight Jr. voted in as Associate Chief of the Coos Band

•             1981 April. Coos Band and Eastern Woodland Band merge to form the Northeast Woodlands-Coos Band.  With the leaders as Chief Richard Phillips, Associate Chief Joe Pero, Associate Chief Emerson Garfield and Chief Historian of Written and Verbal Tradition Howard F. Knight, Jr.

•             Emerson Garfield is installed as Associate Chief of the Northeast Woodlands-Coos Band and takes the Cowasuck Oath.

•             1981 May Chief Richard Phillips suddenly resigns (for family reasons) and Emerson Garfield takes over as acting Chief until a permanent Chief can be chosen.

•             1981 Sept. Chief Joe Pero chosen as new Chief of the Northeast Woodlands-Coos Band.

•             1981 Nov. Due to Chief Joe Pero’s failing health, Tolba Clan Chief Howard F. Knight, Jr. chosen as Acting Band Chief to run the day to day affairs of the band.

•             1983 Oct. Howard F Knight, Jr. is installed as Chief of the Northeast Woodlands-Coos Band and takes the Cowasuck Oath.

•             1992 Dec. Chief Howard Knight Jr. resigns due to illness.

•             1993 April. Chief Howard Knight Jr. The Grand Council of the Cowasuck of North America.

•             2006 to 2010.  Chief Brian Chenevert  Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation

•             2006 to 2007 Co-Chief Nancy Millette Lyons. Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation (Resigned as Co-Chief. Took Sub-Chief temp)

•             2007 to 2008 Sub-Chief Nancy Millette Cruger Lyons Doucet. Resigned 23 Nov. 2008 from the Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation

•             2007 to 2009 Sub-Chief Leo Descoteaux. (passed over) Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation

•             2009 to May 2011 Sub-Chief Paul Bunnell.  Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation

•             2011 May to Aug. 2011 Temp appointed Chief Paul Bunnell. Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation

•             2011 Aug. to May 2013 Temp Co-Chief Paul Bunnell and Co-Chief Nathan Pero of Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation

•             2013 May to 2020 May. Chief Paul Bunnell & (Co-Chief Nathan Pero only to 2015 Oct.)  for the Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation

•             2020 May to May 2027. Chief Paul “Gwilawato” Bunnell of the Koasek (Cowasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation
